Child dies after traffic crash in PolkThe accident was Saturday morningCamille Spencer12:37 PM, Jun 6, 201510:22 PM, Jun 6, 2015 DAVENPORT – A 4-year-old boy died Saturday morning after a traffic accident in Davenport, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.Here’s what happened, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office:At approximately 9:15 am, Saturday, June 06, 2015, a gray, 2006 four-door Toyota, being operated by 41-year-old Robert Carroll was in slow moving traffic in the right (west) lane of Southbound US 27 at Polo Park Boulevard, Davenport.While at a slow roll, the Toyota was struck in the rear by a 2006, Freightliner box truck belonging to RME Trucking from Winter Garden, and operated by 18-year-old Ednaldo Silva Marques of Winter Garden.According to the investigative information, Marques appeared to be travelling at highway speed and braked just short of impact with the Toyota. The impact caused the back of the Toyota to be forced up to and into the back seat where two children were seated; four-year-old Nicholas Jayden Carroll, and 2-year-old MacKenzie Carroll.After impact, the box truck pushed the Toyota into the rear of a 2006, Dodge Ram pick-up truck, operated by 52-year-old John Robert Dean.The box truck and the Toyota remained engaged and came to final rest in the right (west) lane of US 27 at the north edge of the intersection. The Ram truck came to a controlled stop south of the intersection on the right (west) shoulder.Polk County Fire and Medic units responded to the scene. Carroll, and his two children were extricated from the vehicle. Mr. Carroll, was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert, but is now listed in guarded condition; two-year-old MacKenzie was the right rear passenger, and was flown to Arnold Palmer Hospital as a trauma alert also; she is currently listed in serious condition.Four-year-old Nicholas was the left rear passenger and died in the ambulance at the scene while being treated.Marques, was transported via ground ambulance to South Lake Hospital where he was treated and subsequently released for a hand injury he suffered while trying to break the window of the Toyota in order to assist the Carroll family.Dean, and passenger, 52-year-old Sherry L Dean, were not injured.There was no airbag deployment in the box truck, but Marques was seat belted. There was no airbag deployment in the Toyota since it was only equipped with front airbags.Mr Carroll did not appear to be seat belted at the time of the crash. Both young children were in child seats in the back passenger compartment.Mr. and Mrs. Dean reported that they were wearing seat belts.Impairment on the part of any of the drivers does not appear to be a factor. There is no indication that distraction or excessive speed were factors by any drivers.Southbound US 27 was closed for approximately five hours due to the crash and recovery. No criminal charges are currently anticipated.
